How do we support e-commerce and online retailers?

QMS Supporting Online Retailers

This week we watched with interest the final TV episode of ‘Back in Time for the Weekend’, which addressed the 1990’s decade. For those who remember it or better still grew-up in the 90’s, it was a marvellous walk down memory lane as we briefly relived the hazy days of Brit-pop and discussed at length what was better? The Sega Mega Drive or Super Nintendo? Of course, this was all viewed through rose-tinted glasses looking back in fondness of a slower-paced, simpler, pre-internet way of life.

But it did highlight and underpin that although technology has been part of our lives from the early 70’s, it was not until the mid-90’s that technology really started to become integrated within the business landscape. Socialising, shopping & even running a business was still very much in the physical realm with no real need or perception for an online presence.

This was mainly due to the fact that using the internet was a relatively slow, painstaking process where websites were largely comprised of text, extremely basic, and consisting mainly of tags for headers, paragraphs, and links. When it came to communicating via e-mail, there was a much longer response time compared to today as accessibility was isolated to a work environment, the main family computer or a scattering of cyber cafés.

‘Back in Time for the Weekend’ reinforced to us that those relatively archaic days are now long passed and our Sci-Fi perceptions have in some respects become a reality in the present day, with 24/7 connectivity to Wi-Fi or Cloud technology made available across many different platforms and devices. Industries that hardly existed in the 90’s, are now thriving with one of the most prominent of these being the rise of the online retailer.

Digital technologies in the form of smartphones, touchscreens and information infrastructure have rapidly revolutionized the way that consumers shop.  They have also reduced the need for a physical High Street presence as retailers can now reach their target customers via online eCommerce sites & market places.
